A Court of Thorns and Roses, by Sarah J. Maas

A Court of Thorns and Roses, by Sarah J. Maas

Hey all! I just finished reading a hugely hyped book nowadays, A Court of Thorns and Roses! Yes I’m finally caught up with the hype, and I can totally see why it’s there! :)

(Back cover blurb) “When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she knows about only from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal but Tamlin - one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world. As Feyre dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility to a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she’s been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow over the faerie lands is growing, and Feyre must find a way to stop it... or doom Tamlin - and his world - forever.

This book is a re-telling of Beauty and the Beast.

My very first thought: wait, this isn’t a standalone? YAYYYY!

For those of you who don’t know, Sarah J. Maas has written A Court of Mist and Fury. This should be published in May, and I’m so excited! I do think that this would have made a great stand-alone, but I’m happy there’s more! :D

And now for the review!

WOW I was not expecting to read this 400-page book this quickly! It took me 3 days, and I can’t say that I wasn’t busy during that time!

The writing was so beautiful and eloquent, it was so incredibly smooth to read. Events came one after another in a natural flow, nothing really seeming out of place. The story was amazing to read as well, with all of it’s twists in turns, always in a direction that made it more intriguing and fascinating.

The ending literally had me on the edge of my seat. I’m not kidding. When she (see spoiler section!!)... just.... wow!

So for the characters, cus if you guys know me and my reviews, I love raving about the characters.

Feyre was basically the polar opposite of Belle in the classic fairytale. While Belle is shown as nice and caring and sweet and a book worm, Feyre is sharp and not exactly gentle, honest, and illiterate. Basically, she is taken the the Spring Court as a price for having killed a wolf, who turned out to be a fairy. She does it mainly to protect her family. She is such a strong protagonist! I loved her character!

Tamlin took me a while to get into, to be honest. But once I did I really liked his character! It basically started when he just started being... nice? Is that the word I’m looking for? Yeah I’ll stick with nice, and caring. It’s so hard to say anything without spoiling half the book, but he’s so protective and strong as well! Feylin is perfect, they were so good together!

At the way beginning, I honestly thought that Feyre might end up with Lucian. Lucian is a bit more mysterious and shady about his past, but cares deeply about his friends. He’s smart and witty, although sometimes fairly devious. Awesome!

The other ‘good’ characters - Alis and Nesta - were so helpful and nice! I was especially impressed with Nesta for reasons I can’t mention to avoid spoilers.

Now for the villains!

Well Rhysand isn’t a total ‘villain’. More about that in the spoilers. But throughout most of the book, I hated his guts. He was sneaky and a bit abusive and, honestly, just rude. He even became scary at times.

But the worst was Amarantha. SUCH A GOOD VILLAIN! (you know what I mean...) I hated her. I mean, some villains are bad, but she was plain awful! Wicked in every way. I mean sure she has a though past and stuff, but I mean come on, this fairy was so cruel and merciless!

- Those tests that Feyre has to go through to ‘prove her love’ were strange. The first one with the worm was just scary, the second one where Lucian was trapped and she had to read got me stressed... and the last one almost made me cry. That was the ultimate cruelty, in my opinion. And when Tamlin was the 3rd victim I re-read the passage a million times to make sure I got it right. I was so so sad, and then when the life-saving plot twist was explained I smiled like and idiot! Aaaand then she had to go ahead and ‘die’. But hey at least she’s a Fairy now!

-I was expecting her to turn into a fairy, Simply because how cruel would it be for there to be this great love between Feyre and Tamlin, just for him to never age and for her to get old more quickly than he could bear? So I knew it would happen at some point! And I was happy when it did! :)
- Some people ship Feyre with Rhysand. I can’t for some reason o.o I can see why people do, but I can’t! I mean I’m happy that he had this whole hidden agenda in the end and that he was sneakily working against Amarantha, but I still feel like the two of them together would be wrong.
- Can someone help me out and tell me whether chapter 23 was a dream or not? I. Can’t. Tell!
- The curse that Amarantha set on everyone... wow that was bad. Poor Tam! I feel so bad for Lucian too, he was so badly mistreated. You know when you just want to see a character and hug them, saying ‘it’ll be okay’. I feel like I should be doing that.

I would write more, but I have a lecture to go to.

I’m obviously giving this a 5/5, why would I not?

I hope you all have a fabulous day!!

Have you read A Court of Thorns and Roses? What did you think about it? Let me know! :D

  1. WELCOME TO THE FANDOM :D There's so much I want to comment on, so brace yourself ;)
I knew this book wasn't a standalone, but I agree with you when you said that it would have made a great standalone! There weren't that many loose ends, apart from Rhysand's deal with Feyre to spend a week every month with him.
Wasn't Feyre great? She was determined to make it through! I liked the twist on her and Belle, especially how Feyre can't read. Belle is one of those bookworms we all wish we could be, whereas Feyre struggles to learn to read. But she makes up for it for being a great hunter, and extremely smart.
I completely 100% ship Feyre and Tamlin <3 They've both been through so much, and deserve happiness with each other :)
One of my personal favourites was Lucien. Like you said, he was mysterious, but also witty and smart. If he doesn't end up with anyone...can I have him? :D
I'm thinking Nesta will come back for the next book, since she was such a strong character and in a way, grounds Feyre to her human side. Which will be interesting to read about in the next book, now that Feyre is fey ;)
Amarantha was a fantastic villain! She was absolutely horrible and frightening. I would never want to find myself faced against her, yikes!
Okay, I'm done, I promise. But I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

    1. THANK YOU!!! :D
I totally agree with everything! :) I’m really bothered with the fact that she might end up with Rhys.. .If that happens I’ll be upset (but I’ll probably still love the book, hehehe)
... but... Lucien... I like Lucian too >.<
OMG I HAVE A THEORY - Maybe... maybe Nesta + Rhysand? o.o I would ship that, for real!
But I do think the role that you just suggested is more probable, and would be nice to read about :)
And IKR! She’s a villain I loved to hate. Kinda like Valentine, actually.

    2. Ooh, I've never considered Nesta and Rhysand! I've considered Nesta and Lucien, since they both have no love interests at the moment. And their personalities would compliment each other...sort of...right?

    3. Well you never know! I think they could be cute together :3
Nesta and Lucien I never considered. Maybe? We’ll have to see, and I can’t wait until May to see! :D Now I really have to continue Throne of Glass!

  2. Great review! I love Feyre and Tamlin together, I mean why would she go through all those trials to prove her love for him and then end up with Rhysand?? That makes no sense. And I agree with how strong and admirable Feyre is as a character, I adore her :D And even if this book would be good as a stand-alone, Sarah J Maas is such a great writer I know she'll make this series amazing!

    1. Thanks so much! Exactly, but soooo many people seem to think they’ll end up together. I refuse >.<
And yes! I can’t wait to see how the series plays out!

Hey guys! I hope you enjoyed this post!
Any and all comments make me smile, and I will reply to all of them!
I can reply in English, French, and sometimes in Dutch and German.
Have an absolutely fabulous day! <3
