Top 15 of 2015!

Top 15 of 2015!

Hey all!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! :D

I hope you all have an amazing 2016, full of all good things :) I want to thank all of you guys for being an amazing group of readers! I know I already said this previously, but THANK YOU!!!

As promised, today, I’m doing my Top 15 books that I read in 2015.
Now a lot of these didn’t come out this year. Amazingly, only one of these is a re-read!

So let’s get started! :D

1. Clockwork Angel - Aka the infernal devices #1 and 2. I love Cassandra Clare’s writing and her shadowhunter world! I cannot WAIT to read Clockwork Princess and her upcoming book, Lady Midnight!

2. Throne of Glass - Has this book seriously been published for several years, and I only just found this series? It’s so great!

3. The Sirens of Falkeld - Now this is an ARC that I read. You can buy it now! I didn’t know what to expect from this book, but I ended up really liking it! It’s such a peculiar mermaid book!

4. The Iron King - I’d love to read the next books! The first book was a fun read, I enjoyed it’s take on known fairy tales!

5. Forget Tomorrow - Another ARC I really enjoyed! I hope I’ll get the chance to read the next one! This one is being sold in hardcover, too! Definitely worth the read :)

6. Saint Anything - Probably my favorite contemporary of the year. It was simple and realistic, and made me smile.

7. Library of Souls - Okay to be fair I read the entire ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children’ this year. However, the last book, Library of souls, really surprised me! My favorite of the series for sure!

8. The Shock of the Fall - This contemporary was more heartbreaking, but so nice! (We’re wierd that way, as booklovers. We can cry during a book, want to throw it on the floor, break because of the ending, and then recommend it to every person we know! Like The Fault in our Stars. Yeah, TSOTF was like that!)

9. Red Queen - This was a fun read, and I can’t wait until Glass Sword is released! It did have some obvious YA tropes, but it was still surprisingly good!

10. Magonia - Probably one of my favorite supernatural books of the year! The writing was magical, and the story was really surprising! I loved the mythology!

11. Illuminae - So much fun to read! And it had such an amazingly cliff-hanger-y ending, with awesome characters. It was just a shame that it took a while to get into. Otherwise, it was amazing!!

12. Nimona - My first graphic novel! I thought it was SO GOOD! Just go read it. It takes a few hours at most, and is totally worth it!

13. Wonder - Like the Shock of the Fall, but happier. I can honestly recommend it to anyone from 10 years old to adults. It has such a nice message, and is a really nice read!

14. An Ember in the Ashes - Such a good debut novel! The second book, A Torch Against the Night, is one of my most anticipated books of next year!

15. I am the Messenger - My only top-re-read of the year! I seriously really like this book, saying that little things can help people in ways you don’t expect. Just go out there and make someone’s day, it’ll be worth it in the end <3

I can narrow these down more, too. My top of the top would include An Ember in the Ashes, Nimona, Illuminae, Magonia, The Shock of the Fall, I am the Messenger, Throne of Glass, The Infernal Devices, and Wonder. :)

How about you? What were some of your favorite books of the year?

And again, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! <3

The Sword of Summer, by Rick Riordan

The Sword of Summer, by Rick Riordan

Hey all!
I just finished The Sword of Summer, by Rick Riordan!  Gonna keep this one short because it’s currently 12:30 in the morning... ._.

Goodreds Blurb:
"Magnus Chase has always been a troubled kid. Since his mother’s mysterious death, he’s lived alone on the streets of Boston, surviving by his wits, keeping one step ahead of the police and the truant officers.

One day, he’s tracked down by a man he’s never met—a man his mother claimed was dangerous. The man tells him an impossible secret: Magnus is the son of a Norse god.

The Viking myths are true. The gods of Asgard are preparing for war. Trolls, giants and worse monsters are stirring for doomsday. To prevent Ragnarok, Magnus must search the Nine Worlds for a weapon that has been lost for thousands of years.

When an attack by fire giants forces him to choose between his own safety and the lives of hundreds of innocents, Magnus makes a fatal decision.

Sometimes, the only way to start a new life is to die . . .

Okay
Norse mythology is a LOT more complicated and messed-up than I thought it was.

This book was a lot of fun to read! It’s a lot like the PJO series - Magnus (rhymes with swag-ness) (did anyone get that reference?), a homeless 16-year-old figures out he’s Frey’s son. Frey’s the norse god of summer and healing and wealth and growth. He dies, becomes an undead-warrior, and goes on a quest. Both of them are funny and witty, with a similar sense of humor.

They would either be best friends or kill each other.

Magnus has the best group of friends! Sam(irah) is a lot like Annabeth. She’s from Iran (or Iraq?), and is from a traditional family, but is the daughter of Loki.

And then there’s Hearth and Blitz. Hearth is a deaf elf who taught himself magic. He’s really sweet, and may be one of my favorite characters. Blitz is a dwarf with... a certain stubborn character, who’s really into fashion. Best friend pair i’ve read about in a while!

I loved the PJO cross-overs! so many little hints and nudges towards the series!

Magnus himself is awful at fighting, but has awesome magic! And, his sword, ‘Somervanger’ (aka Jack), talks and attacks on it’s own! Super convenient, even though it ends up making him as tired as he would have been if he had done the attack himself...

Anyway, I’m so sorry this is so short, just know that I really loved this!

4.5 feathers!

Wonder, by R. J. Palacio

Wonder, by R.J. Palacio

Hey all!
I just finished Wonder, by R.J. Palacio!
This book is definitely making it in my top 15 of this year! I’m so sorry for the pun, but it was wonderful!!

Goodreads Blurb:
"You can't blend in when you were born to stand out.

My name is August. I won't describe what I look like. Whatever you're thinking, it's probably worse.

August Pullman wants to be an ordinary ten-year-old. He does ordinary things. He eats ice cream. He plays on his Xbox. He feels ordinary - inside.

But Auggie is far from ordinary. Ordinary kids don't make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds. Ordinary kids don't get stared at wherever they go.

Born with a terrible facial abnormality, Auggie has been home-schooled by his parents his whole life, in an attempt to protect him from the cruelty of the outside world. Now, for the first time, he's being sent to a real school - and he's dreading it. All he wants is to be accepted - but can he convince his new classmates that he's just like them, underneath it all?

Narrated by Auggie and the people around him whose lives he touches forever, Wonder is a funny, frank, astonishingly moving debut to read in one sitting, pass on to others, and remember long after the final page.

This book is a wave of feels. Not just a wave, actually, it’s a whole feel-tsunami. (a feelnami? nahhh)

It is both sad and happy and comforting - it both gives hope for humanity and destroys it. Kids can be as mean as they can be sweet when they are confronted with something they don’t know, like August.

August is an extraordinary character, all while being ordinary. I’m not saying that because he has a mutation that made his face mal-develop. He is genuinely a sweet and fun kid! He has a Star Wars addiction, a few good friends, a loving family, and a good sense of humor. But people judge the kid by his cover and treat him differently because of it. Some people bully him mercilessly, while others befriend him like a normal person.

The book was written very simply, in a ‘he-said she-said’ way that made it a quick an easy read. It can really be read by anyone 10 and up, but with different understanding of the book, I think.

One thing I loved was the fact that there were 8 parts, most of which were told by a different point of view. His friends, family, and acquaintances tell their story about how their lives entertwined with August’s, and how it changed them. (there was one part I didn’t like much, which was Justin’s, just because there were no capital letters or quotation marks... ;-; ) But they really each brought a new perspective to the story in a perfect way.

All of the characters were so unique and well thought-out. However, their backstories weren’t what was important for any of them, it was really who they were as a person that was brought to attention the most. The little things they did for August, the way they acted with others, who they were as individuals... and I think that that’s the main message form this book - people may have different looks, stories, and experiences, but it’s who they are on the inside that matters most.

I’m so giving this a 5/5 feathers!

Have you read Wonder? What did you think about it? Let me know! :D

3. Best winter memory?
Making an igloo-slide-thing with my cousins in my grandparents back yard with all the snow we had! We had like 3 feet of fluffy, white snow! I think I was 13-14 at the time, and we managed to make a whole ice bridge, which we would crawl under and climb/slide over. We also made an awesome sledding curve thing!

4. Best fragrance for winter?
Sugar cookies or candy-cane!

5. Favorite Christmas food?
Buche de Noel! That or potato gratin :3

6. Most worn sweater?
Probably this dusty pink one Im wearing now =p

Scarves. But to be honest, I dont pull off either of them well =p

15. Favorite thing about winter?
Christmas and seeing my family in France!

Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare

Clockwork Prince, by Cassandra Clare

Hey all!
It’s Christmas break! And I’m on vacation! And I have time to read again! And things are great! :D

So as you may have guessed by the the title, I managed to finish Clockwork Prince yesterday in the car!

And may I say, it was amazing! But it’s going to be VERY tricky to review this without spoilers. So... sorry in advance if I accidentally and unintentionally spoil anything for you!

Goodreads Blurb -
"In the magical underworld of Victorian London, Tessa Gray has at last found safety with the Shadowhunters. But that safety proves fleeting when rogue forces in the Clave plot to see her protector, Charlotte, replaced as head of the Institute. If Charlotte loses her position, Tessa will be out on the street—and easy prey for the mysterious Magister, who wants to use Tessa’s powers for his own dark ends.

With the help of the handsome, self-destructive Will and the fiercely devoted Jem, Tessa discovers that the Magister’s war on the Shadowhunters is deeply personal. He blames them for a long-ago tragedy that shattered his life. To unravel the secrets of the past, the trio journeys from mist-shrouded Yorkshire to a manor house that holds untold horrors, from the slums of London to an enchanted ballroom where Tessa discovers that the truth of her parentage is more sinister than she had imagined. When they encounter a clockwork demon bearing a warning for Will, they realize that the Magister himself knows their every move—and that one of their own has betrayed them.

Tessa finds her heart drawn more and more to Jem, but her longing for Will, despite his dark moods, continues to unsettle her. But something is changing in Will—the wall he has built around himself is crumbling. Could finding the Magister free Will from his secrets and give Tessa the answers about who she is and what she was born to do?

As their dangerous search for the Magister and the truth leads the friends into peril, Tessa learns that when love and lies are mixed, they can corrupt even the purest heart.

NOW THIS WAS JUST A WHOLE PACK OF FEELS WRAPPED UP IN A NICE BOW!

(Uuh how to do this without spoilers...?)

This book follows on so so well after Clockwork Angel! It basically starts off where it ends, and didn’t leave out anything important.

It’s full of deceit and heartbreak and mystery and confusion and action and Shadowhunter amazingness.

Am I the only one who read the original Mortal Instruments series, and every time Magnus come up in this series I pause reading and think “MAGNUS YAY!”. Cus I caught myself doing that XD

Jem! And Will! Just... these guys are fantastic. I am kinda annoyed that the love triangle is so incredibly confusing for Tessa, but both guys are so precious!  :3

SPOILERS!!!
- SAHSSALSDKFJA JEM’S PROPOSAL THO!
- I feel so bad for Will... ;_; his ‘curse’ is so messed up and cruel and you find how how incredibly caring he actually is! <3
- NATE YOU TRAITOR! (And Jessamine! She’s actually REALLY annoying -.-)
- Charlotte is the owner of the institute yay! :D
- Sophie is so awesome for a Mundane!
- Jem don’t die don’t die don’t die! (he doesn’t as far as i know, no worries)
- I can’t wait for the clockwork finale oh my gosh the giant was already such a fantastic idea now I’m like WOAH WAIT I NEED TO KNOW!!!
- Will and Tessa will obvs end up together... she’s trying too much to forget him.
- both guys are bae

So that’s it for this! I’m sorry its sort, but the thing with second-book-syndrome is that it’s really REALLY hard to review second books in trilogies!

I’m giving this a 4.5/5 feathers!

Did you read Clockwork Prince? What did you think? Let me know! :D

12 Days of Tagmas #4 - The Winter Wonderland Book Tag!

12 days of Tagmas #4 - The Winter Wonderland Book Tag!

There’s a lot of christmassy tags / tags that look cool! So, throughout December, I’ll try to do 12 Tags!
I CHALLENGE YOU TO DO THE SAME! We can celebrate Tagmas together! :D

I saw this tag on A book lover’s playlist make sure to go check out her blog!

So let’s get this started! :D

1. What book is so happy and sweet that it warms your heart?
So many YA books are dark and sad! I guess a happy and sweet book that warms my heart would be The Giver, by Lois Lowry. That book, even though it has some sadder bits, it is still so nice! :)

2. What is your favorite book with a white cover?
Ooh I don’t have many white covers, actually! I haven’t read Everything, Everything yet, but it has a BEAUTIFUL cover!
One that has a white cover that I did read was Matilda, by Roald Dahl.

3. You’re sitting in a nice, comfy chair, wearing a onsie, with a lovely hot chocolate but what MONSTER read are you reading?
If you’re talking about a monster-big book, I’m totally going with City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare!
If you’re talking about a book with monsters, I’m saying Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling!

4. It started snowing and you decided to have a snowball fight! What fictional character would you love to have a snowball fight with?
Non-bookish character - Jack Frost from Rise of the Guardians!
Bookish Character - Po from Graceling.

5. Sadly, your fire is starting to go out. So what book would you tear the last few chapters out of to keep it burning?
Umm I’d take the last chapters of Angel Burn, by L.A. Weatherly. There was a lot of fluff in the whole book. Might as well burn it all, to be honest, it wasn’t great.

6. What book is so close to your heart that you would give it to someone for Christmas who hasn’t read it but would like to get into reading?
This should be no surprise, but I’m saying the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. It got me into reading, it’s so great, and the story always puts me in a reading mood!

That’s it! :D I hope you enjoyed and I’ll see ya soon for a new tag. Bye!!! :D

So let’s get this started! :D

1. “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch, Name a villanous character you couldn’t help but love.
Ooh! Um I think that AIDAN from Illuminae is considered to be bad, but I still liked it!

2. “All I want for Christmas is You, Which book do you most want to see under your Christmas tree?
The rest of the Throne of Glass series! *-*

3. “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”, Name a character which overcomes major obstacles, and learns to believe in themselves.
I think one of the characters who went through amazing character development and learned about themselves through major obstacles is definitely Percy Jackson.

4. “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town” , Which character do you think would be on the top of the Naughty list? The Nice list?
Naughty: Sebastian Verlac from the Mortal Instruments
Nice: Jonas from The Giver

5. “Frosty the Snowman, Which book just melts your heart?
The Fault in our Stars...

6. “Feliz Navidad, Name a book that takes place in a country other than your own.
Like every book ever? Nah just kidding, but I’ll say Soundless, cus It’s in China.

7. “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”, Which holiday book do you use to spread the Christmas joy?
Even though I do think Harry Potter is very Christmassy, and Let it Snow is a nice winter read, I would definitely use The Polar Express!

8. “Sleigh Ride What character would you love to spend the holidays with? (Doesn’t have to be a love interest!)
I still don’t really know! I guess I would say the crew at Camp Halfblood, cus I think christmas could be hilarious with them!

Hey all!
So for today’s tag, I’m going with something I saw Regan @PeruseProject do and I thought it looked fun!

I tag you all to do the same! :D

1. Do you have a favorite winter read?
Harry Potter, for some reason, feels like a really christmassy read? I dunno if you agree with me, but it’s so nice to read during the winter by a fireplace! *-* Except we don’t have a fire place...

2. Pick a book with blue on the cover.
Let it Snow, by John Green, Maureen Johnson and Lauren Myracle. It’s blue and it’s christmassy!

3. Pick a book you would put as a star on the top of your Christmas tree

Ooh this is hard, cus there’s so many pretty covers! But I do think that Magonia was my favorite cover of the year! :D

4. Pick one place that would be perfect for a winter vacation.
Okay so I looove going to the Alps for Christmas, so I’ll just stick with that!

5. Pick a fictional character who you would like to come with you on this Christmas vacation.
Oh! I dunno actually! This is hard! Any suggestions?

6. Name a book you really want for christmas.
The rest of the Throne of Glass series! *-*

7. Name your favorite movie / treat / activity to do during the holiday season.
Movie: Probably The Polar Express? It’s so nice ! C:
Treat: Candy Canes, Pepernoten, Buche de Noel, hot chocolate, and a few others!
Activity: Aside being with my family in France, definitely ice skating with my friends at the christmas market C: Oh and crafts =p

So now that I’m all done with uni for a while, I took some lazy time to catch up on what I missed on Youtube, including booktube. And there, I saw that two of my favorite booktubers (Jessethereader and Abookutopia, who you should check out if you haven’t already!) did this tag!

So you probably heard about the Falling Kingdoms series. I’m one of those people who hasn’t read them yet, but would love to read them. Some of you may know that book 4 (if I’m not mistaken) is coming out next year!
To honor that, the author, Morgan Rhodes, created this tag centered around the universe her book is set in, but relates to different books! Aaaand I thought the questions were so great that I could do the tag as well! :D

So let’s get this started!

  1. In Mythica, there are constant betrayals, and you cannot trust anyone. Which book character would you trust to be your sidekick on this adventure?
Ooh starting off on a tough one! I think some characters I could trust would be Percy Jackson, Lucian Mulholland (Stravaganza series), Katsa Middlunds (Graceling series), or Peeta (Hunger Games). They each have their own qualities that make them both trustworthy and useful as a sidekick! So hard to choose just one though!

  1. You will come in contact with people who would want you dead in Mythica. Would you be an archer, like Katniss or an assassin, like Celeana?
...
I do archery... I own a child’s standard bow (for when I was younger) and a recurve bow which I use now...
Do I even need to officially answer this?

  1. What fantasy would would you like to conquer?
SO MANY OF THEM! But, I think The Seven Kingdoms from Graceling would be EPIC! That or Alagaesia from Eragon!

  1. Which fictional character would you choose to rule at your side?
Ooh so this is both a book-boyfriend question and a ruler question! Wow! Let me think about that! This is really hard, but I think I might say prince Po, from Graceling again. (That series is so underrated!) Sorry for using the same series again, but it just fits!

  1. Who would you throw into the dungeon?
Sebastian Morgenstern!

  1. Who gets stabbed in the back?
Ooh, so like who would be naive enough to get stabbed in the back? I might get hate for this, but Tris Prior. She’s constantly stabbed in the back anyway, right?

  1. What elemental magic would you choose to wield?
WATER LIKE NO QUESTION ASKED ABOUT THAT!

So that’s the Tag! Feel free to do it yourself, let me know if you do!
Also, I’m participating on #Abookishholday on instagram, so every day in December, I post a picture! :D
let me know if you have any tags you want me to do! :D
