Glass Sword, by Victoria Aveyard

Glass Sword, by Victoria Aveyard

Hey all!
I just (finally) finished Glass Sword! *Fireworks* because that took ages. You can blame it on schoolwork ^-^

Goodreads Blurb:
"If there’s one thing Mare Barrow knows, it’s that she’s different.

Mare Barrow’s blood is red—the color of common folk—but her Silver ability, the power to control lightning, has turned her into a weapon that the royal court tries to control.

The crown calls her an impossibility, a fake, but as she makes her escape from Maven, the prince—the friend—who betrayed her, Mare uncovers something startling: she is not the only one of her kind.

Pursued by Maven, now a vindictive king, Mare sets out to find and recruit other Red-and-Silver fighters to join in the struggle against her oppressors.

But Mare finds herself on a deadly path, at risk of becoming exactly the kind of monster she is trying to defeat.

Will she shatter under the weight of the lives that are the cost of rebellion? Or have treachery and betrayal hardened her forever?

The electrifying next installment in the Red Queen series escalates the struggle between the growing rebel army and the blood-segregated world they’ve always known—and pits Mare against the darkness that has grown in her soul.

This was dark... A lot darker than I expected.
But it was really good!

*This review will contain spoilers of Red Queen*

Ok so after Red Queen, Where Maven tricked the world into thinking Cal and Mare were murderers, they joined the Scarlet Guard to fight Maven and the Queen, because they want silvers to rule.

Aw man I don’t even know where to start with this review. I want to keep the characters last...

I found the pacing of this book to be a hint too fast. I feel like so much happened in 440 pages, and I couldn’t get all of it, even though I probably did.

So throughout the book, the group goes around the country looking for ‘newbloods’ - people like Mare who has red blood but with silver abilities. This took up a bunch of the book, and the abilities were so creative! I loved seeing the personalities and the powers that went with them!

There were quite a lot of tropes in this book, but little unique ideas made them not as ‘trope-y’.

I really like how much of a turn this took from Red Queen - The first book was a lot about royalty and Mare hiding, whilst this one was all out on the field, with feels.

ABOUT the feels, let me talk about some spoilers before getting into characters.

  • SHADE WHAT NO! Shade was probably my favorite character and of course, of course, he had to die. ;-; I actually got really sad. And I thought it was so cute when you find out he’s with Farley! :3 I did ship Farley and Kilorn for a bit, but when Farlade was introduced, I liked it! ^^
  • The end... Cliffhangers... no... ;-;
  • That attack at the prison! And the dead queen!
End Spoilers

Cal is great - although he can have some temper, and he’s still loyal to the silvers, (Which I really don’t mind even though everyone else in the book does), he has a huge heart, is smart, and just cares about the turnout. Mare+Cal = Yes. BUT...

Mare really, really annoyed me. She went from a girl from the Stilts forced to be something she wasn’t, to a military-general-like-person, and very very dark. I understand she’s in pain, and confused, but she always had such a negative attitude, pushing people away. Nothing ever made her happy, even things that should have. She became violent and practically bloodthirsty. And that bothered me. A lot. What did you guys think about that?

I’m giving this 4/5 stars!

Have you read Glass Sword yet? What did you think? Let me know!

  1. Ahhh, I plan to read this book sometime next week! Your review has me even more excited! I need to whiz through the other books right now to get it it!!!

    1. No take your time with Rebel! :D But yeah Mare is a real pain, have fun dealing with her XD I hope you enjoy it!!! :D

  2. I'm happy you enjoyed this, despite Mare still being quite annoying! I haven't read Red Queen yet, because it seems like all bloggers universally think that Mare is the most annoying character in this book :S

    1. Mare was fine in red queen, but became a pest in Glass Sword! I’m glad I’m not the only one to think so!

Hey guys! I hope you enjoyed this post!
