Pottermore - Can you guys do me a quick favor?

Hey all!
So maybe some of you guys were on Pottermore before it changed to what it was now. You know, the Pottermore with the comments sections, the interactive books, the potions and duels and collections.

I’m writing an essay on Harry Potter fans and how they have influence on the ‘owners’ of the story and the site. It’s pretty hard to find first-hand accounts of how much fans appreciated the old pottermore vs. how much they dislike the new pottermore, even though that’s a large topic of discussion.

Can you guys do me a favor and, in the comments, write a short bit about why, as a harry potter fan, you enjoyed the old website? I would appreciate it so much!! <3

Everything, Everything, by Nicola Yoon

Everything, Everything, by Nicola Yoon

Hey all!
I just finished reading Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon!
One word: ADORABLE

Goodreads Blurb:

"My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.

But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.

Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.

Ok first off - I didn’t know what to expect - I wanted to read it when I saw it on Netgalley, and when I saw the hard copy at my bookstore I just thought ‘why not?’. I’ve been in the mood for a contemporary practically since I got halfway through Glass Sword, and this seemed like a good choice.
To be honest, my brother was asking me what the main character was allergic to. I read the first chapter to find out, and it got me hooked. I finished Glass sword and picked it up immediately.

The book is an incredibly light, easy and fluid read (It’s rare that I read a 300-page-book in 2 days). And it was adorable! Now I’m not the biggest reader of romances, but this was just so sweet!

Okay so basically Maddie is a girl who has SCID - a low immune system which basically makes her ‘allergic’ to everything - practically anything can make her sick. She’s lived in her house all her life and has never really gone outside.

Until Olly.

So Olly is adorable as well - he’s a parkour guy, a math genius, and probably has one of the biggest YA-hearts ever. He’s dark and ‘mysterious’ (not really).

So it’s no surprise that Maddie and Olly fall for each other - it’s a YA contemporary! But one thing I loved is how they’re shown as yin and yang - she is Japanese/African American, and he’s caucasian. She always wears white, and he always wears black. He’s an outdoorsy guy while she’s stuck inside. Yin and Yang and Yes I love it!

(I just realized this has no structure, but I’m going with it!)

Maddie loves reading, and studies architecture. She’s quite normal, really. She is funny, witty, slightly rebellious and curious about the world. And Olly tips her world around.

So Maddie’s relationship with her mom is a huge part of this book - her mom is all she has left, and they spend a lot of time together. Until Olly.

(Dang it Olly why did you have to go and mess up Maddie like that? Haha just kidding you two are cute ^^)

This book brought good feels, not the feels that leave you just wanting to sit in the rain contemplating life. *Cough Clockwork Princess*

I really don’t want to say too much in the non-spoilery section. Just go read it! I promise it has a good ending!

Spoilers start here. I’m usually like ‘yeah just read it if you want’, but now, if you are considering to pick this up, PLEASE STOP HERE! Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
So their trip to Hawaii - it was rash, and stupid considering her situation, but it was perfect. It wasn’t quite like the trip to Amsterdam from TFIOS, it was really her discovering the world and what it had to offer. She didn’t feel sick (until she had to be hospitalized for a viral infection) and was just... happy. We don’t get a bomb dropped on us about Olly secretly having cancer or whatever. It was just nice!

The Revelation:
I was not expecting that Maddie wasn’t sick. The fact that it was all her mom’s psychological condition that ‘made her sick’ was probably the saddest part of the book - it was heart-wrenching when she found out that she was living in a bubble all her life for nothing.
My only real regret about the book was that this part felt a bit rushed. But it was still amazing, and Yoon was a genius for having that idea. Plot twist like I haven’t seen in a long time!
END OF SPOILERS!

So for those of you who skipped the spoilers like you should have, I’m taking half a point away because the ending felt a bit rushed. Happy ending though! :)

I’m giving this a 4.5/5 feathers!
Have you read Everything, Everything? What did you think? Let me know! :D

Glass Sword, by Victoria Aveyard

Glass Sword, by Victoria Aveyard

Hey all!
I just (finally) finished Glass Sword! *Fireworks* because that took ages. You can blame it on schoolwork ^-^

Goodreads Blurb:
"If there’s one thing Mare Barrow knows, it’s that she’s different.

Mare Barrow’s blood is red—the color of common folk—but her Silver ability, the power to control lightning, has turned her into a weapon that the royal court tries to control.

The crown calls her an impossibility, a fake, but as she makes her escape from Maven, the prince—the friend—who betrayed her, Mare uncovers something startling: she is not the only one of her kind.

Pursued by Maven, now a vindictive king, Mare sets out to find and recruit other Red-and-Silver fighters to join in the struggle against her oppressors.

But Mare finds herself on a deadly path, at risk of becoming exactly the kind of monster she is trying to defeat.

Will she shatter under the weight of the lives that are the cost of rebellion? Or have treachery and betrayal hardened her forever?

The electrifying next installment in the Red Queen series escalates the struggle between the growing rebel army and the blood-segregated world they’ve always known—and pits Mare against the darkness that has grown in her soul.

This was dark... A lot darker than I expected.
But it was really good!

*This review will contain spoilers of Red Queen*

Ok so after Red Queen, Where Maven tricked the world into thinking Cal and Mare were murderers, they joined the Scarlet Guard to fight Maven and the Queen, because they want silvers to rule.

Aw man I don’t even know where to start with this review. I want to keep the characters last...

I found the pacing of this book to be a hint too fast. I feel like so much happened in 440 pages, and I couldn’t get all of it, even though I probably did.

So throughout the book, the group goes around the country looking for ‘newbloods’ - people like Mare who has red blood but with silver abilities. This took up a bunch of the book, and the abilities were so creative! I loved seeing the personalities and the powers that went with them!

There were quite a lot of tropes in this book, but little unique ideas made them not as ‘trope-y’.

I really like how much of a turn this took from Red Queen - The first book was a lot about royalty and Mare hiding, whilst this one was all out on the field, with feels.

ABOUT the feels, let me talk about some spoilers before getting into characters.

Spoilers!

  • SHADE WHAT NO! Shade was probably my favorite character and of course, of course, he had to die. ;-; I actually got really sad. And I thought it was so cute when you find out he’s with Farley! :3 I did ship Farley and Kilorn for a bit, but when Farlade was introduced, I liked it! ^^
  • The end... Cliffhangers... no... ;-;
  • That attack at the prison! And the dead queen!
End Spoilers

Cal is great - although he can have some temper, and he’s still loyal to the silvers, (Which I really don’t mind even though everyone else in the book does), he has a huge heart, is smart, and just cares about the turnout. Mare+Cal = Yes. BUT...

Mare really, really annoyed me. She went from a girl from the Stilts forced to be something she wasn’t, to a military-general-like-person, and very very dark. I understand she’s in pain, and confused, but she always had such a negative attitude, pushing people away. Nothing ever made her happy, even things that should have. She became violent and practically bloodthirsty. And that bothered me. A lot. What did you guys think about that?

I’m giving this 4/5 stars!

Have you read Glass Sword yet? What did you think? Let me know!

Top Ten Tuesday - Why don’t I talk about these more often?

Top Ten Tuesday - Top Ten Books I really Love But Feel That I Haven’t Talked About Enough / In A While

Hey all!
Before we start today, I just want to say: Two hours ago, Bruxelles Airport was attacked, as well as a subway station in the city. The explosions injured many people. This is an hour away from my house (in the Netherlands). I’m hoping that the next few hours will be free of additional disasters. My thoughts are in Bruxelles now.

On another note, more positive, I was talking with Pintip Dunn, the author of Forget Tomorrow, an ARC I really enjoyed in October. I’m so honored that she sent me my very first physical ARC of her upcoming book, The Darkest Lie, coming out on June 28th! :D
(I just saw that the second part of Forget Tomorrow can be pre-ordered yay!)

Anyway!

Welcome to a new Top Ten Tuesday! This meme was started by The Broke and the Bookish, so I suggest you go check out their blog! :D

This week’s theme is Top ten books that I really like but I feel like I don’t talk about enough

Let's get started!

(I’m going to try to make this creative!)

Caroline walked into her room, her shelf directly on her right. She sat on the end of her bed and looked at it, as she did sometimes. Her gaze stopped on The Testing and she started wondering why she never actually finished the series - the first book was great!
“I’ll have to re-read this eventually” she thought to herself and pulled it off her shelf, putting it next to her.
Right next to The testing was Stardust, by Niel Gaiman. One of her favorites. She loved both the movie and the book. She smiled a bit to herself, glad her dad introduced the story to her a few years ago. She continued scanning her book and saw I, Coriander, by Sally Gardner and took it down from the shelf. It was one of her favorites since... 7th grade was it already? She smiled at a distinct memory, that of her friend telling her ‘you can’t cry for characters in a book’ while she was reading it. Caroline shook her head - Yeah, you can. For sure.
Her brother dragged his feet into her room. He flopped onto the bed. Caroline groaned ‘get offf!’ and he sat up. “I’m supposed to pick a book that’s not Diary of a Wimpy Kid or Goosebumps for school.” He said with a sigh. Reading wasn’t his thing at all. She rolled her eyes and pulled The Thief Lord from the shelf and handed it to him. “Imagine a crazy mystery in Venice, you can watch the movie if you want, too.” she said. He sighed “I’ll try it.” and left the room.
Caroline stood up and continued scanning her shelf, her eyes sharp. She tapped a nail on the spine of Illuminae and An Ember in the Ashes, the sequels couldn’t be published soon enough! She sighted and put her earphones over her ears and went to her music, in the mood for listening to Ed Sheeran, or OneRepublic. She shuffled her playlist, and ‘Dark Times’ started. Sad, but still catchy. (Yes that’s what I’m listening to right now XD) She continued running her fingers over her books and paused on Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. It really was a great series, and fit strangely well with the song. She smiled at the Wings series, much lighter and happier, with an amazing fantasy around it. The song changed to something more energetic and she couldn’t help but dance a bit. Finally, she saw her copy of The DaVinci Code and read the backcover blurb - such a crazy story, but definitely worth the read!

ok that wasn’t the best story I’ve written, but it was fun to write anyway! :D Do you have any books you don’t talk about enough? Let me know!

Birthstone Book Tag!

Birthstone Book Tag!

Hey all!
Many thanks to Kayleigh @ A Book Lovers Playlist for tagging me to do the Birthstone Book Tag! I haven’t been tagged in a while, so I’m excited to start!

In case you are curious, by birthstone is Sapphire. Yep, I was born in September!

So let’s get this started!

1. January - Garnet - Associated with warding off negative forces and dark energies - Name a book with the darkest/evilest character you can think of.
*Slowly holds up Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows* Oh come on you know Voldemort gets the prize for darkness!

2. February - Amethyst - Associated with royalty - Name a book with regal qualities... you can off the characters, or choose the King of all books.
You know what, I think I just have to go with Red Queen for this! Well at least the second book, Glass Sword! I’m almost done with it I promise!

3. March - Aquamarine - Washed out - Name a ‘wishy-washy’ character, a character who is not strong or a follower.
So... like a character who’s just... there? Not strong or a follower? Hm.. I don’t know o.o

4. April - Diamond - A diamond in the rough - A book that you love but is still not well known.
Ooh good topic! I have a whole list for you guys!
- Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton
- Graceling by Kristin Cashore
- I, Coriander by Sally Gardner

5. May - Emerald - Said to balance energy - Name two characters who balance each other well.
Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase. Enough said!

6. June - Pearl - Associated with loyalty - Name a character who is loyal to the end.
Aw I just used Percy! Well I guess I’ll say Simon from The Mortal Instruments. Because Simon.

7. July - Ruby - Blood red - Name a book that made your blood boil, that made you angry.
*Everyone in the world slowly holds up their copy of Allegiant, with the last few chapters covered in tear-marks and a few crumpled pages*

8. August - Peridot - Pale in comparison - Name a supporting character who you like better than the main character.
I like Fang better than Max in Maximum Ride, I’m sorry ._.

9. September - Sapphire - blue like the calming ocean - Name a book that had a calming effect on you.
The Rest of us Just Live Here was such a cute, relaxing book! Read it! :D

10. October - Opal - Iridescent - Name an iridescent book (pretty cover, or colorful characters).
The Brilliant Light of Amber Sunrise has a STUNNING cover! It’s just so pretty! And so does Rebel of the Sands!

11. November - Topaz - Associated with Resilience - A book with a character who rises to the top in a time of adversity.
Katniss Everdeen, of course! :D

12. December - Blue Topaz - Associated with friendship - A book friendship you’d love to be a part of.
Hmm maybe the Paper Towns’ crew? They seem fun :) That or the group from Saint Anything!

And that’s it :D
I don’t have a lot of time right now to tag people, but I’ll comment on your blog about this if you are tagged! ^_^
What do you think, do you agree?

Top Ten Tuesday - Spring TBR

Top Ten Tuesday - Top Ten books on my spring TBR

Hey all!
Welcome to a new Top Ten Tuesday! This meme was started by The Broke and the Bookish, so I suggest you go check out their blog! :D

This week’s theme is Top ten books on my spring TBR

There's so many books I want to/need to read this spring!

Let's get started

1. Heir of Fire & Queen of Shadows, by Sarah J. Maas
Yes this is two books, and I might not get to both, because they are both quite long and I'm fairly busy, but I hope I can get through both! :D

2. The Martian, by Andy Wier
Yesss it's my goal to read this by the time July comes around!

3. Shatter Me, by Taereh Mafi
I finally ordered it to see what all the hype is about, and should have it soon. Same goe with the Grishas trilogy, I just got the first ones to try them out, then might get the rest on Bookoutlet eventually.

4. Lady Midnight, by Cassandra Clare
I just NEED to read this okay? Hopefully it'll have arrived by Friday, so it'll be my next current read after Glass Sword.

5. Maximum Ride Forever, by James Patterson
It's the end of a whole series I've been reading since I'm what, 11? I need to know how it ends! The first 'last' book had a fairly satisfying ending, and I made the mistake of spoiling the ending of MRE for myself by looking at the last page, so I know what's gonna happen... I just want to know what leads to that! It's been a while since I've picked up a MaxRide book though, I might need to start from square one...

6. The Brilliant Light of Amber Sunrise, by Matthew Crow
To be honest, I got this because it was super cheap on bookoutlet, and the cover was pretty! It's supposed to be like TFIOS, and I figured I don't have enough contempoary on my shelf, so I had to get it! ^^

7. A Court of Mist and Fury, by Sarah J. Maas
May. Just gotta wait until May.

8. Dissonance, by Erica O'Rourke
This book is quite unknown. It's apparently about how the choices you choose not to make opens up an alternate reality where you did make that choice. This sounds so interesting, so I got the first two books of the trilogy. (And, I'm not gonna lie, the covers are pretty)

9. The Blood of Olympus, by Rick Riordan (finally, I know)
As with MaxRide, it's been a while since I've read any of the books in this series, so I might need to start by the beginning, but they're fast reads so it should be fine.

10. Graceling, by Kristen Cashore (re-read)
I've read this book twice already, but I just love it, so I'm happy to be re-reading it this spring with my friend Erika @ Books, Stars and the Pages In Between!

Thats it! What book is high up on you spring TBR list? Let me know! :D

Bookish Talks ~3~ New shelf, book haul, and read-along!

Bookish Talks ~3~

Yayyy another bookish talk!

~New Shelves~
I GOT A NEW SHELF!  I know the picture is a bit dark: but there’s the before and after pictures!

I finally have more room! I did have to get rid of my instagram-area to install the shelf, but there’s no regrets! <3

~Book Haul~
... Guys...
I’m waiting for 12 books in the mail...
Well 11 actually, I received one, Maximum Ride Forever, today. I’m so glad my MaxRide collection is finally complete! I might have to do a re-read though, just because I don’t remember much from them, just little things... But it’s an easy series to fly through.

I just realized the pun... it wasn’t intended I promise!

But yes! Bookoutlet’s taking its sweet time to send me 5 books, waiting for lady midnight, and my mom surprised me by ordering the Iron Fey series as a box set! It’s been on my wish-list for a while now, and I can’t believe I haven’t gotten to them yet!

I also ordered a SIGNED COPY of Queen of Shadows by Sarah J Maas and I’m so excited to get it! :D

~Allegiant~
Is anyone else worried about how the Allegiant movie may turn out, but wants to see it anyway? I know I do!

~read-along event?~
I’d love to do another read-along event like I did with Erika in October! If you aren’t aware, we read through the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series throughout the month and had a whole discussion day, mythology day, and review day going on. It was intense, but so much fun!!

I would really enjoy doing another one! If anyone is interested and/or has a suggestion, let me know! :D

~Currently Reading~
Look out for another Glass Sword review! I’m over 100 pages in, and I don’t know about you guys, but I’m getting a Mockingjay vibe from it for now, but it’s really good so far!

And that’s it for this time! :D
Have a lovely day!

The Rest of us Just Live Here, by Patrick Ness

The Rest of us Just Live Here, by Patrick Ness

Hey all! I just finished The Rest of us Just Live Here, by Patrick Ness!

Goodreads Blurb:
"What if you aren’t the Chosen One?

The one who’s supposed to fight the zombies, or the soul-eating ghosts, or whatever the heck this new thing is, with the blue lights and the death?

What if you’re like Mikey? Who just wants to graduate and go to prom and maybe finally work up the courage to ask Henna out before someone goes and blows up the high school. Again.

Because sometimes there are problems bigger than this week’s end of the world, and sometimes you just have to find the extraordinary in your ordinary life.

Even if your best friend is worshipped by mountain lions.

Award-winning writer Patrick Ness’s bold and irreverent novel powerfully reminds us that there are many different types of remarkable.

Guys! Woah!

Okay so you know how there’s so many tropes in YA books? Some people like some that others hate, and vice versa. This is a YA book that basically makes fun of all of those tropes, and it is done PERFECTLY!

The Rest of us Just Live here is about a group of four friends - Mikey, the main character, Jared, Mel and Hanna. They are going to graduate high school soon, and they’re... just going through life, really.

Okay so let me explain something first. This is basically our world. These four are ‘normal’ kids, like you and me, and some people are around them are the ‘indie kids’. Here’s a quote that explains them well:

‘The Indie kids, huh? You’ve got them at your school, too. That group with the cool-geek haircuts and the thrift shop clothes and names from the fifties. Nice enough, never mean, but always the ones who end up being the chosen one when the vampires come calling or when the alien queen needs the source of all light or something. They’re too cool to ever, ever do anything like go to prom or listen to music other than jazz while reading poetry. They’ve always got some story going on that they’re the heroes of. The rest of us just have to live here, hovering around the edges, left out of it all, for the most part.
Having said that, the indie kids do die a lot. Which much suck.” ~ Patrick Ness

If you think about it, most main characters do completely fit that description. I never thought about it that way before, but it’s so true! At the beginning of each chapter, there’s a short story with the Indie Kids, and they practically go through every single YA trope - insta-love, dangerous tasks, magical items, monsters, etc...

Now I’m not bashing any other YA tropes or characters through this review. However, this book did put things in an interesting light.

So these 4 friends are close to graduating, and they get caught in the blurry border between being caught in the action and being on the sidelines - they get in a car crash for running into a deer, they get interrogated by strange policemen, see the indie kids running for their lives, etc... Mikey is freaking out about that. He is sure that a new guy, Nathan, has everything to do with it.

This book’s end-of-highschool setting really hit home - a friend and I have been nostalgic about our end of high school, which was two years ago, and the whole process these characters are going through of worrying about universities, graduating, and exams was super familiar.

What’s good is that Ness could have easily made the ‘normals’ even more normal. But he chose to have them have normal peculiarities.

Mikey is such a great protagonist!  He has anxiety issues, so he’ll repeatedly do actions such as washing his hands or counting the corners of a book over and over again until someone gets him out of his loop. But he’s also genuinely nice, and trying. He wants to be important, even though he may not be. He is also very much in love with Hanna, one of his best friends.

Hanna is sweet as well! After graduation, she has plans to help out in Africa. She is very open around Mikey, and is a really good friend.

Jared is probably my favorite character. Him and Mikey are ‘chosen brothers’, like parabati I guess?  They have such a good connection. I’m not sure if this counts as a spoiler or not, but he’s the grandson of the goddess of cats, which means he can heal them, as well as others. He’s gay, but that never is forced onto anyone, which I though was nice.

Mel is Mikey’s older sister, who almost died of anorexia a few years before the events of the book. She has her own problems to deal with, but is also very close to the group.

This book was incredibly refreshing. It was so nice to read about ‘our’ side of things. I didn’t think I’d enjoy it this much!

I’m giving this book a 5/5 feathers!!

Have you read The Rest of Us Just Live Here? Let me know what you thought!

11 Facts
- I have a hard time with change, most of the time, so I’m a little bit of a hoarder. But sometimes, I’ll suddenly want to change so might do something drastic. Like yesterday, we went to IKEA, bought a bookshelf and set it up, so I had to change some things around my room. No idea why I suddenly wanted to do that!
- I’m half French, half American, but live in the Netherlands
- On the back of my bedroom door, I collect cards. Not really postcards of places, more like little quote cards, images, designs, etc... I have a Paper Towns poster, a Mortal Instruments poster that was in City of Heavenly Fire, a few minimalist bookish designs that I printed out and a bunch of random stuff.
- Headphones all the way - I hate listening to music ‘out loud’
- I just ordered a signed copy of Queen of Shadows :3
- I’m writing my future of literature paper on Pottermore as a Fansite, and my chemistry for the future paper on the use of metal hydrides for energy storage
- I love the ocean, but not the beach
- my absolute favorite movie when I was growing up was The Little Mermaid
- I really enjoy watching the most random series! Greys Anatomy, Once Upon a Time, Shadowhunters, The Shannara chronicles...
- Ok. I have earrings in the shape of hexagons. I just thought they were cute little hexagons, and then one of my friends was like ‘why are you wearing cyclohexane earrings?’. Now I can’t see them in any other way o.o
- I don’t play video games a lot, but I love The Legend of Zelda! *-*

11. Glowstars: yay or nay?

Okay I have to get going to class very soon, so I can’t tag 11 people. But I’d love to see some of you do the tag anyway! Let me know if you do, and feel free to answer the questions without doing the tag!

Have a great day!
