The Sword of Summer, by Rick Riordan

The Sword of Summer, by Rick Riordan

Hey all!
I just finished The Sword of Summer, by Rick Riordan!  Gonna keep this one short because it’s currently 12:30 in the morning... ._.

Goodreds Blurb:
"Magnus Chase has always been a troubled kid. Since his mother’s mysterious death, he’s lived alone on the streets of Boston, surviving by his wits, keeping one step ahead of the police and the truant officers.

One day, he’s tracked down by a man he’s never met—a man his mother claimed was dangerous. The man tells him an impossible secret: Magnus is the son of a Norse god.

The Viking myths are true. The gods of Asgard are preparing for war. Trolls, giants and worse monsters are stirring for doomsday. To prevent Ragnarok, Magnus must search the Nine Worlds for a weapon that has been lost for thousands of years.

When an attack by fire giants forces him to choose between his own safety and the lives of hundreds of innocents, Magnus makes a fatal decision.

Sometimes, the only way to start a new life is to die . . .

Okay
Norse mythology is a LOT more complicated and messed-up than I thought it was.

This book was a lot of fun to read! It’s a lot like the PJO series - Magnus (rhymes with swag-ness) (did anyone get that reference?), a homeless 16-year-old figures out he’s Frey’s son. Frey’s the norse god of summer and healing and wealth and growth. He dies, becomes an undead-warrior, and goes on a quest. Both of them are funny and witty, with a similar sense of humor.

They would either be best friends or kill each other.

Magnus has the best group of friends! Sam(irah) is a lot like Annabeth. She’s from Iran (or Iraq?), and is from a traditional family, but is the daughter of Loki.

And then there’s Hearth and Blitz. Hearth is a deaf elf who taught himself magic. He’s really sweet, and may be one of my favorite characters. Blitz is a dwarf with... a certain stubborn character, who’s really into fashion. Best friend pair i’ve read about in a while!

I loved the PJO cross-overs! so many little hints and nudges towards the series!

Magnus himself is awful at fighting, but has awesome magic! And, his sword, ‘Somervanger’ (aka Jack), talks and attacks on it’s own! Super convenient, even though it ends up making him as tired as he would have been if he had done the attack himself...

Anyway, I’m so sorry this is so short, just know that I really loved this!

4.5 feathers!

  1. "Norse mythology is a LOT more complicated and messed-up than I thought it was." <--haha, I loved that part!
Magnus Chase completely blew away my expectations! I thought it would be similar to Percy Jackson in some aspects, but it was completely different. I loved the crossovers too, like with Annabeth and Riptide (that part where Jack told Magnus that a pen sword was lame was hilarious). I really want to know Magnus' reaction to Annabeth's story at the end of the book!
I keep wondering if there will also be a crossover with the Kane Chronicles too. That would be really neat!
Hearth is probably one of my favourite characters too! He's absolutely sweet, and I love him so much. He and Blitzen make a fantastic pair!

    1. Hehe thanks! It’s true though!
I also was expecting it to not be as great, kinda like the Kane chronicles which I didn’t like as much.
Hahah yes Jack was so great! Sass in a sword!
THATS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING! I really want to know his reaction to her story, and i want to see her be like “eh, not surprised”.

I have a soft spot for Hearth, to be honest. ^-^ Haha yes they’re an awesome pair!
