Mythology Wednesday - Daedalus and Icarus

Mythology Wednesday - Daedalus and Icarus!

Hey all!

Welcome to our second Mythology Wednesday! Every Wednesday, both Erika from Books, Stars, Writing, and Everything in Between and I will be summarizing a myth or legend that is relevant to the current book in our read-along!

Erika’s topic this week is Pan. Make sure to check it out! :)

Icarus and Daedalus
*Sings* Icarus is flyyyying to close to the sun
Ooh I really like this one!

Daedalus lived in Athens. He was known to be an amazing architect and inventor who could pretty much build anything. However, he was also really... how can I put it, proud? Basically he saw that one of his nephews was also super talented, and was afraid he may be even better than he was. He basically threw his nephew off the Acropolis... Anger management, much?
Either to hide or to escape grief, he went to Crete.
He ends up befriending the king of crete, Minos.
Somewhere in the meantime, the Minotaur is born. Happy birthday bull-man! To hide the Minotaur, Minos asks Daedalus to build a complex maze, so that the minotaur can never be found again. However, this monster still needs to be fed. Every 9 years, the king sends someone down in the maze to meet their fate.
After the whole Thesus story (which I wont’ talk about too much), in which Daedalus helps Thesus get out of the Maze, Minos gets mad at Daedalus because of it, and locks him and Icarus, his son, in a tower.
They needed a way to get out. Daedalus collects twine, feathers and wax, and builds giant wings out of them.
Before jumping out of the tower to escape, the wings strapped to their arms, Daedalus warns Icarus. “Do not fly too low, or the salty sea dampen the feathers. And do not fly too close to the sun, otherwise, the heat will melt the wax”. They flew perfectly. In his excitement, Icarus flew too close to the sun, softening the wax. The wings broke apart, and Icarus fell into the sea. (cry)

I hope you enjoyed this little greek mythology post! :D
Make sure to comment any thoughts! C:

Have an amazing day!

  1. Haha, loved those side comments! Flying would be pretty neat, no? I've love to get some of those wings for myself. Of course, I wouldn't fly too close to the sun. And flying too close wouldn't be too much of an issue for a daughter of Poseidon, but I wouldn't want to ruin the experience by cutting the flight short for a swim!

    1. Thanks! :D
Flying would be awesome, but I doubt Zeus would be happy with us flying around ^-^
But I’d totally want to try!

    2. I'm sure if we stick closer to the ground, we should be fine! Worst comes to worse, we nose-dive into the water for protection!:D
